Aluminium Bahrain (Alba), the world’s largest aluminium smelter on a single site, has initiated a pilot programme to test an electric, battery-powered Aluminium Fluoride (AlF3) feeding vehicle. The vehicle, developed by Techmo Car S.p.A., is currently undergoing evaluation in Reduction Lines 4, 5, and 6.
The trial will assess the vehicle’s performance and efficiency, with Alba considering a potential fleet-wide adoption based on the collected data. This initiative aligns with the company’s Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategy and reinforces its commitment to sustainable operations.
A handover ceremony was held on 23 January 2025 at Alba’s premises, attended by CEO Ali Al Baqali, COO Dr. Abdulla Habib, and Techmo Car Managing Director Massimo Zannini. Alba's CEO highlighted the importance of this initiative in minimizing the company’s environmental footprint and expressed optimism about the trial’s success.
Techmo Car’s Managing Director emphasized the significance of the collaboration, underscoring the shared commitment to advancing sustainable technologies within the aluminium sector. He noted that the electric AlF3 feeding vehicle could enhance operational efficiency while contributing to Alba’s decarbonisation efforts.
This initiative builds on Alba’s broader sustainability strategy. Since 2023, the company has deployed solar-electric powered industrial Personnel Carriers (PCs) and established three solar charging stations equipped with advanced battery storage systems at its power stations.
Techmo Car, based in Italy, specializes in engineering and manufacturing customized mobile and stationary equipment for the aluminium industry.
