South32 Receives Federal Environmental Approval for Worsley Mine Development

South32 has confirmed that Worsley Alumina has received environmental approval from the Australian Federal Government for the Worsley Mine Development Project under the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act (1999).
The approval comes with conditions that align with those set by the State Government, which granted its environmental approval on December 20, 2024. The project is designed to ensure continued access to bauxite, sustaining production at Worsley Alumina. Mining of new bauxite areas near the existing operations is set to begin in the fourth quarter of the 2025 financial year, with additional mining areas expected to support production until at least 2036.
Worsley Alumina has been in operation for over 40 years and remains one of the largest employers in the region. The facility has received multiple certifications from the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative for meeting global standards in responsible alumina production.
South32 stated that it will proceed with the project in compliance with the approvals granted by both the Federal and Western Australian governments.
