Nornickel and BelAZ Partner to Enhance Mining Machinery Development
Nornickel, one of the world’s largest precious metals producers and a leader in non-ferrous extraction, has signed a cooperation agreement with BelAZ, the leading CIS manufacturer of mining dump trucks. This partnership focuses on the development and production of specialized machinery tailored for Nornickel’s mining operations, aiming to reduce reliance on imported equipment and enhance operational stability.
BelAZ, known for producing mining dump trucks with payload capacities of 30 to 220 tonnes, has created a prototype loading and delivery machine with a load capacity of 17.2 tonnes to meet Nornickel’s specifications. Designed for transporting rock mass in deep mining excavations, the prototype was developed based on strict safety and functionality requirements, incorporating extensive experience in mining equipment design.
The agreement includes plans to produce loading and dumping machines, underground dump trucks, and auxiliary equipment powered by both diesel fuel and alternative energy sources. Additionally, the partnership encompasses machine maintenance, overhauls, and the supply of components. Currently, six test samples of underground dump trucks are in operation at Nornickel’s mines, and the company is expected to become a major customer for future equipment, accounting for half of Russia’s demand in the mining sector.
By collaborating with BelAZ, Nornickel aims to strengthen its machine-building capabilities, reduce costs associated with mining vehicle procurement, and ensure a stable supply of ore raw materials required for smelting base and precious metals. This initiative also mitigates sanctions risks by minimizing dependence on equipment from non-CIS countries.
