Melten and Rio Tinto Sign Long-Term Bauxite and Alumina Agreements

Melten Energy & Metals has entered into two long-term agreements with Rio Tinto to enhance its supply chain for bauxite and alumina. These agreements support Melten’s expansion of its alumina production capacity at the Aluminium of Greece plant in Agios Nikolaos, Viotia, Greece. The investment will increase alumina output from 865,000 metric tonnes to 1,265,000 metric tonnes annually.

Under the Bauxite Supply Agreement, Rio Tinto will provide Melten with approximately 14.9 million metric tonnes of bauxite from the CBG mine in Guinea over an 11-year period (2027-2037). This supply will supplement Melten’s local production.

The Alumina Offtake Agreement ensures that Melten will supply Rio Tinto with 3.9 million metric tonnes of alumina from its expanded refinery over an 8-year period (2027-2034), with an optional 3-year extension (2035-2037).

Melten Chairman & CEO Evangelos Mytilineos highlighted the agreements as a milestone in securing a competitive and stable supply chain for the company’s alumina production. Rio Tinto Aluminium Chief Executive Jerome Pécresse emphasized the partnership’s role in securing alumina supply for Rio Tinto’s Atlantic operations, enabling continued production of low-carbon aluminium.

These agreements align with Melten’s strategy to reinforce its global presence in the alumina market, ensuring long-term sustainability and competitiveness.
