Global Alumina and Aluminium Production Decline in February

Global alumina production fell by 10.3% month-on-month to 11.54 million tonnes in February 2025, according to data from the International Aluminium Institute. However, compared to the same period last year, production saw a modest increase of 1.5%, rising from 11.37 million tonnes. Average daily global alumina output also dropped slightly to 412,100 tonnes in February from the revised figure of 415,200 tonnes in January.

China, which accounted for over 59% of global alumina production, recorded 6.86 million tonnes of output in February—a decrease of 9.7% month-on-month but a year-on-year increase of 6.6%. In Oceania, alumina production declined from 1.54 million tonnes in January to 1.35 million tonnes in February. Africa and Asia (excluding China) saw their combined output fall to 1.1 million tonnes from January’s 1.3 million tonnes. Europe experienced a reduction of 59,000 tonnes, bringing its total to 571,000 tonnes for the month, while South America’s production dropped by 6.3% month-on-month to 941,000 tonnes.

Global primary aluminium production also saw a significant decline, falling to 5.65 million tonnes in February from January’s total of 6.24 million tonnes. This represents a drop both month-on-month and year-on-year, with reduced operation days and regional declines contributing to the downturn.

Market reactions were mixed despite the production declines. At market close on March 28 at 2046 IST, the most-active April aluminium contract on India’s Multi Commodity Exchange rose by 0.1%, trading at INR 254 per kg (approximately $2.96 per kg). On the London Metal Exchange, the three-month aluminium contract increased by 0.3%, reaching $2,617 per tonne.
