Element3 Achieves Breakthrough in Lithium Production from Oil and Gas Wastewater

Element3, a critical material extraction company specializing in oil and gas wastewater, has announced the successful production of battery-grade lithium carbonate from Midland Basin oil and gas wastewater. This achievement was made at a recycling facility operated by a subsidiary of Double Eagle Energy Holdings IV, LLC, marking a significant step toward developing a sustainable and domestic lithium supply chain.

The lithium carbonate was produced using Element3’s second-generation field demonstration plant, highlighting the scalability and efficiency of the company’s patented extraction process. This milestone demonstrates that unconcentrated, produced water from oil and gas operations can serve as an economical source of battery-grade lithium materials.

“This is another milestone as we work toward utilizing oil and gas wastewater as an efficient and economical source of battery-grade lithium materials, securing the U.S. supply chain,” said Hood Whitson, Founder and CEO of Element3. “With our newly acquired lithium carbonate processing equipment, we are positioned to begin commercial production this year.”

Element3 is currently commissioning its full-scale lithium carbonate plant, which will process the abundant lithium resources found in the region’s oil and gas wastewater. This facility is expected to play a critical role in strengthening domestic supply chain security for essential battery materials, supporting the growing demand for electric vehicles and renewable energy storage.
