British Columbia Confident in Finding New Markets for Aluminum Amid U.S. Tariffs

British Columbia officials are optimistic about securing alternative markets for aluminum produced at the BC Works smelter in Kitimat, following tariff threats from the United States. Ravi Kahlon, the minister coordinating the province’s response, stated that Rio Tinto, the operator of the smelter, is confident it will quickly find non-U.S. buyers.

Premier David Eby recently met with representatives from Rio Tinto, who expressed a “good level of confidence” in identifying new markets for the smelter’s output. Kahlon noted that the provincial government has been collaborating with Rio Tinto and other stakeholders to explore new jurisdictions for B.C. products since U.S. President Donald Trump suggested imposing tariffs.

While acknowledging that the tariffs will have a short-term impact, Kahlon emphasized that the province is optimistic about the long-term outlook, citing ongoing global demand for aluminum.
