Aitik Copper Mine Faces Production Challenges Due to Hard Rock Deposits

The Aitik copper mine is experiencing production challenges due to high deposits of diorite, a particularly hard rock type, which is affecting mining operations as part of a new pushback. As a result, the production rate for the first quarter of 2025 is estimated to be just over 9 million tonnes, while full-year production is projected at approximately 40 million tonnes. The copper grade remains at 0.16%, consistent with previous forecasts.

In 2024, Aitik initiated a new pushback, expanding the open pit and shifting mining operations to ground level. This new mining area, where half of Aitik’s production now takes place, contains oxidized ore deposits, which have a slight negative impact on recoveries. Additionally, the presence of diorite significantly reduces grinding capacity, further constraining production rates.

Drilling results indicate that diorite deposits will continue to impact the production process throughout 2025. Despite these challenges, Aitik’s copper output is expected to remain in line with previously communicated estimates.
