Zangezur Copper and Molybdenum Workers Face Liability Over Strike

February 5, 2025

Employees of the Zangezur Copper and Molybdenum Combine (ZCMC) who have been on strike since January 31 may face disciplinary action, according to a company statement released on Saturday. Over 700 workers have walked off the job, demanding wage increases.

ZCMC management stated that some employees failed to report to work, while others left their posts without authorization, issuing what the company described as an "unrealistic" wage demand. The company claims the work stoppage has significantly disrupted operations and warned that continued disruptions could lead to forced downtime.

The plant’s trade union does not recognize the protest as an official strike and considers it unlawful. The company emphasized that employees failing to fulfill their duties will face disciplinary measures.

The protesting workers, who spent the night on company grounds, intend to continue their demonstration until their demands are met. The average salary at the mill is reported to be 660,000 drams (approximately $1,660).
