Wieland Breaks Ground on $500 Million Modernization of East Alton Facility

Wieland Rolled Products North America, in partnership with Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO), has begun a $500 million modernization of its East Alton facility. The investment will retain 800 jobs in Illinois while enhancing production of critical copper and copper alloy components for electric vehicles (EVs), EV charging infrastructure, and renewable energy sectors.
Governor Pritzker highlighted the significance of the investment, emphasizing Wieland’s long-standing presence in Illinois and its role in job creation. Lt. Governor Juliana Stratton noted that the expansion aligns with Illinois' commitment to sustainability and economic growth.
Wieland's modernization efforts will include the installation of a new state-of-the-art hot rolling mill, increasing operational efficiency and improving product quality. The company modeled the East Alton expansion after its modern plant in Vöhringen, Germany, reinforcing its long-term commitment to Illinois. Wieland’s operations in the state also include facilities in Wheeling, Tinley Park, Granite City, Montgomery, and Carol Stream.
The company received an incentive package valued at approximately $231 million from the State of Illinois, including tax benefits totaling $172 million through the Reimagining Energy and Vehicles (REV) program over 30 years. Additional incentives will support infrastructure projects such as a new electricity substation, workforce development, and capital investments in East Alton.
Officials from the state and local government praised the expansion, with Congresswoman Nikki Budzinski calling it a “transformative moment” for East Alton. The project strengthens Illinois’ position in advanced manufacturing, with leaders from Ameren Illinois and the Illinois Manufacturers’ Association highlighting its role in fostering economic growth and sustainable energy development.
