Stardust Power Breaks Ground on $1.2 Billion Lithium Refinery in Oklahoma
Stardust Power, an American developer of battery-grade lithium products, has officially commenced construction on a $1.2 billion lithium refinery at the Southside Industrial Park in Muskogee, Oklahoma. The groundbreaking ceremony, held on January 22, was attended by company officials, Lieutenant Governor Matt Pinnell, Muskogee Mayor Patrick Cale, and other state and local representatives.
The 66-acre site near the Port of Muskogee was acquired in December 2024 after an independent environmental assessment in 2023 confirmed its suitability for refinery construction. Located close to the nation’s largest inland waterway system and supported by robust road and rail networks, the site offers significant logistical advantages for both construction and operations. Stardust Power also holds a right of first refusal on an adjacent 40-acre parcel, providing potential for future expansion.
The lithium refinery is planned as a two-phase development. Phase one will establish a production line with an annual capacity of 25,000 tonnes, while phase two will add a second production line, doubling the refinery’s capacity to 50,000 tonnes per year. Once operational, it will become the largest lithium refinery of its kind in the United States.
Stardust Power CEO Roshan Pujari emphasized the project’s strategic importance, stating, “This refinery will be crucial for addressing U.S. national security and supply chain risks. By onshoring critical mineral manufacturing, we are helping to sustain America’s energy leadership.”
Lieutenant Governor Pinnell also highlighted the significance of the project for Oklahoma, noting its role in strengthening critical mineral supply chains and enhancing national security.
The refinery’s location in Muskogee benefits from a skilled workforce with roots in the oil and gas industry, further supporting its development and future operations.
