SK Nexilis Secures $133 Million Polish Subsidy for Copper Foil Manufacturing
SK Nexilis, the world’s largest producer of copper foil, has been awarded a $133 million subsidy by the Polish government under the European Union’s Temporary Crisis and Transition Framework (TCTF) program. The Korean company announced that the subsidy, equivalent to 545 million Polish zloty, will enhance its cooperation with Poland on clean energy initiatives and support its copper foil manufacturing plant under construction in Stalowa Wola, southeastern Poland.
The grant marks the largest single payout from the Polish government to a Korean battery materials company and underscores the strategic importance of copper foil in the transition to a net-zero economy. The EU’s TCTF program provides direct aid to companies investing in key sectors such as batteries, solar panels, carbon capture technologies, and other components essential for clean energy systems.
Copper foil is a critical component in lithium-ion battery anodes, enabling the flow of lithium ions during electricity discharge. Each electric vehicle requires 35 to 40 kilograms (77 to 88 pounds) of copper foil. SK Nexilis, with a current production capacity of approximately 100,000 tonnes annually, plans to expand this capacity to 250,000 tonnes by the end of 2025. Major customers include LG Energy Solution, Samsung SDI, SK On, Panasonic, and CATL.
The subsidy strengthens Poland’s position in the global clean energy supply chain and supports SK Nexilis’ vision to meet growing demand for advanced battery materials.
