Rusal to Double Aluminium Powder and Paste Production in Irkutsk

February 4, 2025

Rusal is expanding its production capacity for advanced aluminium powders and pastes in the Irkutsk region, aiming to double its output. These materials are crucial for aerated concrete production, making Rusal a key supplier to Russia’s construction industry.

The expansion is being carried out by OOO Metalcom, which oversees Rusal’s powder business. The company operates production sites in Shelekhov, Irkutsk, and Volgograd. The project will increase Shelekhov’s capacity from 1,200 to 2,400 tonnes annually, while total capacity, including Volgograd, will reach 4,800 tonnes.

With the reduction of European suppliers since 2022, Russia’s construction sector now relies primarily on domestic sources for these essential materials. Rusal has also begun exporting aluminium powders and sees growth potential in international markets.

The expansion is supported by proprietary technology, including a grinding and classifying complex developed in-house. Future plans include launching a premium line of gas formers and low-carbon footprint products.

Aerated concrete, known for its heat and sound insulation properties, is widely used in Russian construction. It accounts for 40% of building walls nationwide and is a staple material in Moscow’s development projects.
