Rio Tinto and AMG M&M Explore Renewable-Powered Aluminium Project in India

Rio Tinto has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with AMG Metals and Materials to assess the feasibility of developing a large-scale, low-carbon aluminium and alumina operation in India. The project would be powered entirely by renewable energy sources, including wind, solar, and pumped hydro storage.
The proposed integrated facility would feature up to 1 million tonnes per year of aluminium production and 2 million tonnes per year of alumina refining. The initial phase of the study will focus on the potential development of a 500,000-tonne-per-year aluminium smelter at a location still to be finalized.
AMG M&M, backed by the founders of Greenko and AM Green, brings expertise in clean energy deployment to the venture. The collaboration aims to position India as a hub for responsibly produced aluminium, aligning with the country’s energy transition goals and Rio Tinto’s strategy to expand its low-carbon aluminium portfolio.
