Novelis, a global aluminum rolling and recycling company headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, has announced the closure of two U.S. manufacturing facilities as part of its restructuring efforts. The Richmond, Virginia facility will cease operations on May 30, 2025, resulting in the loss of 72 jobs, while the Fairmont, West Virginia plant will close permanently on June 30, affecting nearly 200 employees.
The Richmond facility, which produces aluminum rolled sheets for the building and construction industry using pellet casting technology, is Novelis’s only site in Virginia. A company spokesperson confirmed that the decision to close the plant is part of a broader strategy to consolidate U.S. operations and streamline its portfolio. The closure was detailed in a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) filed earlier this month.
In Fairmont, the plant has been operational for over a century and supplies more than 435 types of aluminum products for domestic and international markets. Employees were informed of the closure during a meeting on March 31. Novelis cited “environmental reasons” and high maintenance costs as contributing factors but emphasized its commitment to supporting affected workers through the transition. The company is also creating over 300 new jobs at other facilities across North America.
These closures come amid financial challenges for Novelis, including declining profits due to increased competition in the scrap aluminum market. The company reported a 20% drop in adjusted EBITDA in its latest quarterly results. The closures have raised concerns about domestic aluminum production and their impact on local communities.
