Chinese Nickel Producer GEM Completes 30,000-Ton Battery Materials Project in Indonesia
Chinese nickel producer GEM has completed its annual 30,000-ton high-nickel ternary precursor material project for power batteries in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia. The project, named PT Indonesia Qingmei Energy Materials (Qingmei), is part of the company's broader strategy to support the growing demand for battery materials. GEM has also announced plans to expand the facility's capacity to 50,000 tons in the near future.
The Qingmei project spans 112.13 acres and includes a total construction area of 79,720 square meters. Facilities within the site comprise manufacturing plants, research and development centers, and supporting infrastructure. The project represents a significant investment in Indonesia's nickel processing sector, with a total cost of CNY 2.149 billion. Funding for the project was sourced through a combination of GEM’s own funds (30%) and bank loans along with other self-raised capital (70%).
This expansion aligns with GEM's commitment to meeting the increasing global demand for high-performance battery materials, particularly for electric vehicles and energy storage systems. By enhancing its production capacity, the company aims to strengthen its position in the international market for nickel-based battery materials.
