Marubeni Enters Vietnam’s Aluminum Recycling Market

February 10, 2025

Japan's Marubeni Corporation has entered the aluminum recycling sector in Vietnam through an investment in local firm Nguyet Minh 2 Trading-Services-Environment JSC. Nguyet Minh 2 specializes in melting various types of aluminum scrap, primarily beverage cans, to produce recycled aluminum ingots, according to a statement from Marubeni.

Recycled aluminum ingots emit only 3% of the greenhouse gases generated during the production of new aluminum ingots, making them a valuable resource in efforts to reduce environmental impact. Marubeni highlighted the growing demand for recycled aluminum as industries seek to lower their carbon footprints.

Marubeni has identified green strategies as a core element of its corporate value enhancement and considers the aluminum business part of its green initiatives. Through its investment in Nguyet Minh 2, Marubeni aims to contribute to a resource-circulating economy in Vietnam, ensure a stable medium- to long-term supply of environmentally friendly recycled aluminum ingots, and support the development of a sustainable society.

Vietnam, a leading consumer of beverage cans in Southeast Asia, is expected to generate more aluminum scrap as its middle-income population expands. Additionally, Vietnam has implemented Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) policies, requiring manufacturers and importers of specified items to recycle products and packaging. Nguyet Minh 2, located in Long An province in the Mekong Delta, is an EPR-certified recycler.
