Mangrove Lithium Secures $35 Million for First Electrochemical Refining Plant in North America

Mangrove Lithium has closed $35 million in financing to begin construction of a lithium refining plant in Delta, British Columbia. The facility, set to be operational by late 2025, will produce battery-grade lithium materials sufficient to power approximately 25,000 electric vehicles annually. The project aims to strengthen North America’s lithium supply chain amid China’s proposed export ban on lithium processing technology.
CEO Saad Dara emphasized the plant’s role in enhancing energy independence and meeting growing lithium demand. Investors in the project include Mitsubishi Corporation, Asahi Kasei Corporation, InBC Investment Corp., Orion Industrial Ventures, Export Development Canada, Breakthrough Energy Ventures, BMW i Ventures, and BDC Capital.
The facility utilizes Mangrove’s electrochemical refining process, which is designed to reduce costs and environmental impact by eliminating harmful reagents and minimizing waste. The platform’s flexibility allows for the production of both lithium hydroxide and lithium carbonate, adapting to evolving battery chemistry needs.
