China’s Lithium Carbonate Production Rises Slightly in February

China’s lithium carbonate production reached 64,100 tonnes in February, marking a 0.8% increase from the previous month, according to Mysteel’s updated survey, which covers 68 companies and 83 production bases.

The slight monthly increase was driven by ramped-up output from new production capacities and steady operations at major refineries optimizing costs. Additionally, refineries processing outsourced lithium ore continued production through tolling agreements. Hydrometallurgical plants resuming operations after the Chinese New Year holiday also contributed to the rise in output.

However, based on Mysteel’s older survey sample, which includes 63 companies and 78 production bases, lithium carbonate production in February fell 4.2% month-on-month to 60,900 tonnes. This decline was attributed to fewer working days in February and extended maintenance at some refineries.

Looking ahead, Mysteel projects that China’s lithium carbonate production will increase significantly in March. Based on the new sample, output is expected to rise 22.5% month-on-month to 78,400 tonnes, while the old survey sample predicts a 20.9% increase to 73,600 tonnes.

Few lithium refineries have planned turnarounds in March, and facilities affiliated with CALT are expected to continue expanding production. Additionally, spodumene-based refineries and hydrometallurgical plants are projected to maintain stable output levels.
