JSW Group Enters Non-Ferrous Metals Sector with Copper Mining Contract

January 29, 2025

JSW Group announced its entry into the non-ferrous metals sector by securing a Mine Developer and Operator (MDO) contract for two copper mines in Jharkhand, India. The contract, awarded by state-owned Hindustan Copper Limited (HCL), includes the operationalization of the mines and the establishment of a copper concentrator plant, with a total capital investment of ₹2,600 crores ($315 million).

The two mines, expected to partially commence operations in the second half of the 2026-27 financial year, will have a full-scale ore production capacity of 3 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). JSW Group secured the 20-year MDO contract, extendable by an additional 10 years, through a competitive bidding process. Under the agreement, JSW will handle mine development, capital expenditure, and operational management, including the construction of a concentrator plant, while HCL will provide technical support and receive a percentage of the revenue generated.

Parth Jindal, a senior executive at JSW Group, highlighted the strategic importance of this move, citing growing demand for copper across industries such as electric vehicles (EVs), renewable energy, construction, electronics, and telecommunications. “India is currently a major importer of copper concentrate. By developing domestic copper resources, we aim to support the country’s industrial growth and reduce dependency on imports,” Jindal said.

The venture into copper mining aligns with JSW’s vision to diversify its business portfolio and meet the increasing demand for essential metals critical to India’s infrastructure and technological development. The company aims to play a leading role in supporting India’s transition to sustainable energy solutions while enhancing self-reliance in critical resources.

JSW Group, a $24 billion global conglomerate headquartered in Mumbai, is a prominent player in sectors such as steel, energy, cement, infrastructure, paints, and mining. With a significant presence in India, the United States, Europe, and Africa, JSW is actively contributing to industrial growth and sustainable development.
