Iran Reports 3.2% Rise in Copper Cathode Production for 2024
Iran's copper cathode production grew by 3.2% during the first nine months of the Iranian calendar year (March 20 to December 21, 2024), reaching 216,732 tons compared to 209,956 tons in the same period last year. The data, released by the Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organization (IMIDRO), highlights the increasing output of this critical raw material used in producing copper rods for the wire and cable industry.
The mining sector holds strategic importance in Iran, and successive governments have prioritized its development. IMIDRO, a state-owned entity central to this sector, has implemented various initiatives to advance mining exploration and processing. These efforts include upgrading the geographic information system (GIS) database to meet international standards, employing advanced methods to explore hidden and deep resources, and providing workforce training to address industry needs.
IMIDRO has also focused on equipping and modernizing the country's drilling fleet in collaboration with the Mining Investment Insurance Fund. The organization is working with exploration consultants to improve scientific and technical capabilities while pursuing additional exploration activities at existing mines to increase reserve tonnage. These initiatives reflect IMIDRO's comprehensive approach to ensuring growth and sustainability in Iran's mining sector.
The organization is also incorporating the private sector into exploration operations to enhance participation in this critical field. To further support its efforts, IMIDRO is preparing a strategic five-year plan to intensify exploration activities and improve resource efficiency. By emphasizing sustainable development and leveraging advanced technologies, IMIDRO continues to play a vital role in strengthening Iran's mining industry.
