Galtco is set to establish a low-carbon aluminium production plant in Tolú, Sucre, with an estimated investment of $1.2 billion. The facility aims to produce over 350,000 tonnes of green aluminium annually from the Gulf of Morrosquillo, reinforcing Colombia’s role in sustainable aluminium production.
On January 29, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the Galtco Colombia Project was signed, marking progress toward the development of the industrial complex. The project involves collaboration between public and private entities, including ProColombia, regional authorities, and energy company EDF. Officials highlighted the initiative’s potential to position Colombia as a leader in sustainable industrial practices while fostering economic development.
The plant’s location in Sucre is seen as a strategic choice due to its access to port infrastructure, electrical connectivity via the Chinú substation, and strong solar energy potential. Proximity to ECOPETROL’s industrial facility in Coveñas is expected to provide additional logistical advantages. The project will integrate a hybrid energy system, combining solar photovoltaic farms with gas-fired power generation to ensure a stable and low-emission energy supply. Developed in partnership with EDF, the facility is expected to operate with 27% renewable energy, significantly reducing its carbon footprint.
Currently in the final stages of a bankable feasibility study and detailed engineering phase, the project is scheduled to begin operations in 2029. The Colombian government has committed to introducing regulations supporting electro-intensive industries, which could further benefit the development of the plant.
Galtco expects to generate over 15,000 direct and indirect jobs during construction and operation, prioritizing local hiring in Sucre and the Caribbean region. Training and professional development programs will be implemented to support workforce development. Additionally, the company has outlined corporate social responsibility initiatives, including a Social and Economic Impact Study, to balance economic growth with environmental and social sustainability.
With an anticipated carbon footprint of 5 tonnes of CO2 per tonne of aluminium produced, the facility aims to be among the cleanest aluminium plants globally. The project aligns with Colombia’s broader reindustrialization efforts and energy transition goals.
