Enersense Expands Climate-Friendly Zinc Plant in Norway

Enersense is contributing Finnish expertise to the expansion of a zinc plant in Odda, Norway, enhancing one of Europe’s largest zinc factories. Zinc is a key material for the construction and chemical industries, particularly in protecting steel from corrosion. Historically, zinc production has been associated with high carbon dioxide emissions and heavy metals, but Boliden’s plant has adopted environmentally friendly technologies, aiming to become the world’s most climate-friendly zinc facility.
The plant’s expansion will further reduce emissions, automate processes, and integrate digital technologies. Enersense has played a vital role in installing steel structures and equipment, having delivered over 700 tons of steel structures and installed more than 800 mechanical components. The company is currently installing piping at the facility, demonstrating its expertise in demanding industrial projects.
The project presents logistical challenges due to the remote location and difficult transport routes. Materials and equipment must be transported via fjords, and travel between Odda and Bergen is hindered by poor infrastructure and harsh weather conditions. Despite these challenges, Enersense has deployed over 100 skilled employees to the site, working through heavy rain and winter hazards.
The expansion will double zinc production at Odda, with operations expected to be fully functional by 2025. The facility will be powered entirely by local hydro energy, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability.
