Mopani Copper Mines Targets Major Output Increase with New Underground Infrastructure

Mopani Copper Mines (MCM) is advancing underground infrastructure projects aimed at unlocking 8.5 million tonnes of copper ore over the next four to five years, as part of efforts to significantly raise copper cathode production. CEO Charles Sakanya stated that the company’s goal is to double cathode output to more than 500,000 tonnes within 10 to 15 years, in line with major shareholder International Resources Holding’s ambition to reach 1 million tonnes. Current exploration within Mopani’s license area is focused on raising cathode production to 300,000 tonnes.

MCM has made substantial investments in digital technologies to integrate underground operations with surface activities, improving both safety and production efficiency. Sakanya emphasized the urgent need for robust road and rail infrastructure, as well as a reliable power supply of around 10,000 megawatts, to support the planned increase in copper output.

Zambia’s Mines Minister Paul Kabuswe expressed support for Mopani’s expansion plans and the broader growth of the mining sector. He announced that the Mining Local Content Statutory Instrument will be signed into law next month, aiming to strengthen the role of local businesses and suppliers in the industry. Kabuswe stressed the importance of quality compliance as new regulations are implemented.

The Zambian government is targeting copper production of 1 million tonnes this year, with plans to increase annual output to 3 million tonnes by 2031. The country’s copper production rose by 29.9% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2025, reaching 224,103.8 tonnes. The International Monetary Fund projects Zambia’s GDP growth at 6.2% for 2025, with a current account surplus revised to 0.5% of GDP.
