Codelco and Ennomotive Launch Global Challenge to Eliminate Mineral Dust Emissions in Transport

Codelco, the world’s largest copper producer, has partnered with engineering platform ennomotive to launch a global innovation challenge aimed at eliminating mineral dust emissions during transport. The initiative seeks practical, scalable solutions for agglomerating fine mineral dust generated during mining and handling, with the goal of achieving emissions-free transport and enabling the reuse of dust within the production cycle.

Codelco, which produced 918,000 tonnes of copper between January and September 2024—about 22% of global output—has prioritized open innovation to address operational and environmental challenges. The company notes that while commercial solutions exist for dust mitigation on conveyor belts, there is still no effective method for transporting and reincorporating mineral dust into the processing stream without emissions.

The challenge invites startups, research centers, and companies worldwide to propose efficient, cost-effective technologies or processes for dust agglomeration that are compatible with mineral processing operations. Proposals must change the mechanical behavior of dust so it can be safely transported and reintegrated into the ore flow, without generating further emissions or disrupting downstream processes. The winner will receive funding to pilot their solution with Codelco, with the potential for large-scale implementation.

Interested participants must register and submit proposals by June 30, 2025. The initiative is part of Codelco’s broader commitment to sustainability, circular economy practices, and reducing the environmental impact of mining operations in Chile.
