Metlen’s Gallium Production Project Earns EU Strategic Designation

Metlen Energy & Metals has achieved a significant milestone with its flagship gallium production project at the historic Aluminium of Greece facility being officially designated as a Strategic Project under the EU Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA). Ratified on March 25, 2025, this recognition highlights the project’s pivotal role in strengthening Europe’s supply chain for critical materials, including bauxite, alumina, aluminum, and gallium. Out of 170 submissions across Europe, only 47 projects were approved by the European Commission.

The investment encompasses vertically integrated bauxite mining, an expanded alumina production plant, and facilities for producing 50 metric tons of gallium annually. Gallium is a critical material used in semiconductors and advanced technologies essential for energy transitions and defense applications. The project aims to eliminate Europe’s reliance on gallium imports, particularly from China, which accounted for 98% of global production in 2023.

This designation under the CRMA paves the way for streamlined permitting processes, enhanced EU funding opportunities, and institutional support. It also marks the revival of bauxite mining after decades of dormancy and boosts alumina production in Europe—a sector that has faced significant setbacks in recent years.

Metlen’s €296 million investment will integrate environmentally friendly technologies to reduce carbon emissions while supporting Europe’s green industrial transition. The project is expected to begin operations gradually from 2027, with full-scale production by 2028. Vice President of the European Commission Stéphane Séjourné is scheduled to visit the Aluminium of Greece plant on March 27, where the project’s contribution to European strategic autonomy will be showcased.
